Smyrna was a beautiful city puffed with pride for her wealth and ornate pagan temples to the spirit gods of Rome. Many Christians were sent to the colosseum to be fed to lions or a pack of wolves or to hang on a Roman cross for denying the divinity of Cesar and proclaiming Jesus as Lord. Severe persecution was a daily reality. The touchstone was the temple of the serpent god, Esculapius, which earned the city the title of Satan’s throne. The temptation for split affections was pulling at the church.
