Smyrna was a beautiful city puffed with pride for her wealth and ornate pagan temples to the spirit gods of Rome. Many Christians were sent to the colosseum to be fed to lions or a pack of wolves or to hang on a Roman cross for denying the divinity of Cesar and proclaiming Jesus as Lord. Pergamum was a hub for worship to any Greek god of your persuasion: Athena, Dionysus, Zeus and more. The touchstone was the temple of the serpent god, Esculapius, which earned the city the title of Satan’s throne. The temptation for split affections was pulling at the church. In Thyatira, it was near impossible to sell your merchandise without belonging to a trade guild whose rules include the attendance of pagan festivals and such. This became complicated for the blue-collar Christian trying to make a living the city. Sardis was running on old momentum - a city plagued with idolatry and immorality as other cities, but worse by far.
